Giorgia Meloni Becomes Italy’s Longest Serving Prime Minister
On 4 September 2026, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni’s government completed 1,413 consecutive days in office, surpassing the previous postwar single-government record of 1,412 days held by former PM Silvio Berlusconi’s second government (2001–2005). Meloni assumed office on 22 October 2022 following the 2022 general election. She is the leader of the Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia) party and was the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Italy.
Russia and North Korea Open First Road Bridge
Russia and North Korea opened their first-ever road bridge across their shared border on 7 September 2026. The bridge crosses the Tumen River near Russia’s Khasan area and North Korea’s Rason region. Inaugurated by Russian PM Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song.
India and Germany Mark 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations in 2026

Karnataka Introduces ‘Tr’ Prefix for Teachers
Karnataka has allowed teachers to use the honorific prefix “Tr” before their names — similar to “Dr” for doctors and “Prof” for professors. Announced on Teachers’ Day, 5 September 2026. Karnataka has been reported as the first State in India to formally recognise a separate honorific prefix for teachers. The prefix “Tr” is a professional identity marker and does not amount to an additional academic qualification.
Suru Summer Festival 2026
The second Suru Summer Festival 2026 was held on 26–27 August 2026 at Damsna, Suru Valley, Kargil district, Ladakh. Inaugurated virtually by LG Vinai Kumar Saxena. Aimed to promote Suru Valley and Kargil as destinations for sustainable, cultural, and adventure tourism.
J&K’s First International Film Festival

9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026
The 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 was launched on 9 September 2026 at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre, Varanasi, UP. Observed every September to promote nutrition awareness, maternal health, child development and healthy caregiving.

FSSAI Proposes Red Hexagonal Warning Labels for High Fat
FSSAI has proposed introducing prominent red hexagonal warning labels on the front of packaged foods containing high levels of added sugar, salt and saturated fat. The proposal follows Supreme Court scrutiny. It is not yet a final notified regulation.

AP Showcases ‘One Water’ Vision at IFAT India 2026
Andhra Pradesh showcased its “One Water” approach to urban water management at IFAT India 2026 (9–11 September 2026, Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai). The “One Water” approach means managing all forms of urban water — drinking water, wastewater, rainwater and other water resources — as a single integrated system. Objectives: use less water, reduce losses, reuse treated wastewater, improve rainwater absorption, and use technology for better prediction and management.

Totalisers in EVM Vote Counting
The Supreme Court on 1 September 2026 asked the Union Government to examine the feasibility of introducing totaliser machines to count votes recorded by EVMs. A totaliser aggregates votes from multiple EVM Control Units (CUs) before displaying the result, preventing disclosure of how voters at an individual polling station voted.
Centre Proposes Special Article 371 Provision for Ladakh (371K)
The MHA has proposed a special constitutional arrangement for Ladakh under the Article 371 series, tentatively referred to as a new Article 371K. Discussed with representatives of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). The proposal is not yet law.

India completed 10 years of the Flexible Inflation Targeting (FIT) framework in 2026. The RBI seeks to maintain CPI inflation at 4%, with a tolerance band of ±2 percentage points (2%–6%).

India’s Jute Sector
India is the world’s largest producer of raw jute and the leading producer of jute goods. Jute is known as the “Golden Fibre” for its golden colour and silky lustre. India accounted for around 75% of estimated global jute-goods production as of July 2026.

India’s First Imaging Satellite in Geosynchronous Orbit was launched
ISRO successfully launched GSLV-F17 carrying EOS-05 on 4 September 2026 from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR), Sriharikota. GSLV-F17 placed EOS-05 into Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO), after which orbit-raising manoeuvres are being conducted.
India’s First Geothermal Wells at Puga Valley, Ladakh
In July 2026, the ONGC Energy Centre commissioned India’s first two geothermal wells at Puga Valley in Ladakh. The wells are about 1,000 metres deep and are being used for reservoir evaluation, intended to support India’s first 1 MW demonstration geothermal power project.
Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST)
Scientists using the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) in Hawaii have captured the highest-resolution observations of the Sun’s visible surface (photosphere), revealing tiny whirlpool-like structures along the boundaries of solar granules and magnetic regions. DKIST is operated by the U.S. National Solar Observatory, located near the summit of Haleakalā on Maui, Hawaii. It has a 4-metre primary mirror — the world’s largest solar telescope.
AI-Based Tracking System by ICAR-NRC on Mithun
Researchers at ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland developed an AI-based real-time system to detect and track Mithun behaviour in natural farm conditions. Uses the YOLOv8n model (behaviour detection) and DeepSORT technology (individual tracking). Mithun, scientifically Bos frontalis, is popularly called the “Cattle of the Hills” — has major social, cultural and economic importance for tribal communities of Northeast India.
CosmoCube Mission
UK scientists have proposed CosmoCube, a small satellite to orbit the Moon and use the radio-quiet lunar far side to search for the faint 21-cm radio signal from neutral hydrogen (studying the period between the Cosmic Microwave Background and the first stars). Proposed ~2-year lunar-orbit mission; published in Nature Astronomy, 14 August 2026.
Ocean Research Vessel ‘Sagar Manthan’ Launched by GRSE
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) launched the indigenous Ocean Research Vessel (ORV) Sagar Manthan at its Rishi Bankim Shipyard, Kolkata, on 9 September 2026. Being built for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Ministry of Earth Sciences. Cost: ~₹840 crore. Being built under Vertical-4 (Deep Ocean Survey and Exploration) of India’s Deep Ocean Mission.
Navier–Stokes Problem
OpenAI announced a proposed AI-generated solution to the Navier–Stokes problem in September 2026. However, the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) still lists it as unsolved — the proposed proof has not yet received required mathematical acceptance.

DAC Approves Defence Acquisitions Worth ₹1.10 Lakh Crore
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) (chaired by Rajnath Singh) accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) on 7 September 2026 to proposals worth ~₹1.10 lakh crore. AoN = in-principle administrative approval; not completion of acquisition. Approximately 98% of the procurements to be sourced from Indian industry.

PM Modi paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 100th birth anniversary on 8 September 2026. Born 8 September 1926, Hazarika was a renowned singer, lyricist, composer, poet, writer and filmmaker from Assam. Popularly known as “Sudhakantha”, his songs centred on humanity, social justice, communal harmony and universal brotherhood.

UNGA Declares 27 November as International Day Against Child Marriage
UNGA adopted a resolution on 4 September 2026 designating 27 November every year as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage. Led by Sierra Leone; adopted by consensus. India is relevant: the Government launched the Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat (Child Marriage-Free India) campaign on 27 November 2024 (Ministry of Women and Child Development). Linked to SDG 5.3. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, a child = male below 21 years or female below 18 years for marriage.
International Vulture Awareness Day
International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) observed every year on the first Saturday of September. India’s national-level programme held at Panchkula, Haryana; Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav inaugurated a workshop on the theme “From Crisis to Recovery – Conserving India’s Vultures.” Highlighted: Vulture Safe Zones, safe veterinary practices, conservation breeding, and community participation.

Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI)
The DoT’s Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) (launched 22 May 2025 under the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP)) has helped prevent suspected cyber-fraud transactions worth more than ₹5,043.73 crore by August 2026 (15 months).
