Jammu & Kashmir Hosts Its First International Film Festival
The first International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026 is being held from 7–10 September 2026 across venues in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Jammu. The four-day festival, organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Jammu & Kashmir, is being held under the theme “Rang-e-Cinema”.
The inaugural festival features 135 films from 41 countries, selected from around 1,100 entries. The festival opened with the Lebanese film Dead Dog, directed by Sarah Francis.

India’s Jute Sector
India remains the world’s largest producer of raw jute and the leading producer of jute goods. Jute, known as the “Golden Fibre” for its golden colour and silky lustre, is biodegradable, recyclable, and widely used in packaging, textiles, construction, and soil conservation. India accounted for around 75% of estimated global jute-goods production as of July 2026. The jute industry is concentrated mainly in eastern India, particularly West Bengal, followed by Bihar, Assam, Odisha and Jharkhand.
The Government fixed the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of raw jute at ₹5,925 per quintal for 2026–27, providing an estimated return of 61.8% over the all-India weighted average cost of production. The Jute Corporation of India (JCI) is the sole nodal agency for implementing MSP procurement of raw jute.

Defence
DAC Approves Defence Acquisition Proposals Worth ₹1.10 Lakh Crore
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) on 7 September 2026 to defence acquisition proposals estimated at around ₹1.10 lakh crore. AoN represents the in-principle administrative approval for a procurement proposal and should not be treated as completion of the acquisition process.
- For the Indian Army, the approvals include Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Recce Vehicles, High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs), Self-Propelled Mechanical Mine Layers (MMLs), Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs), Trawl Tanks and the Sarvatra Bridge System.
- For the Indian Navy, AoN was granted for Arudhra Radars and for the design, development and subsequent procurement of Marine Gas Turbines (MGTs).
- For the Indian Air Force, approvals include measures to strengthen the capabilities of fighters, transport aircraft and helicopters, along with procurement of the Ground-Based Multi-Purpose Jammer (GBMPJ) and installation of the Defence Forces Secure Access Card (DEFSAC) System.
A major feature of the approvals is their emphasis on defence indigenisation: approximately 98% of the procurements covered by the AoNs are proposed to be sourced from Indian industry.

5th Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Awards 2026
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) conferred the 5th Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Awards 2026 on 7 September 2026, observed as Swachh Vayu Diwas and the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. The awards recognise the best-performing cities and urban wards for measures taken to improve air quality under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
All 130 NCAP cities were assessed in three population categories — above 10 lakh, 3–10 lakh and below 3 lakh. The assessment covered measures related to road dust, solid waste management, vehicular and industrial emissions, Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, other emission sources, and public-awareness activities. The process included city self-assessment, State-level approval, evaluation by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and independent field verification.

The official rankings show that Guntur in Andhra Pradesh secured joint second rank in the 3–10 lakh population category with a score of 195. Among cities with populations above 10 lakh, Vijayawada ranked 8th, while Eluru ranked 4th among cities with populations below 3 lakh.
Andhra Pradesh also received recognition at the ward level. Vijayawada Ward 60 secured second rank nationally in the ward category covering populations between 10,000 and 30,000.
In India, Swachh Vayu Diwas is organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and is closely associated with the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). NCAP focuses on improving air quality in 130 cities through city-specific measures such as controlling road dust, vehicular and industrial emissions, waste burning and construction-related pollution.
