India–U.K. Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement Comes into Force
The India–United Kingdom Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the related Double Contributions Convention (DCC) came into force on 15 July 2026. The trade agreement was signed on 24 July 2025 and is described as the most comprehensive trade deal implemented by India so far.

The index measures short-term changes in the real output of India’s formal services sector and serves as the services-sector counterpart to the Index of Industrial Production.
The inaugural ISP covers 19 services sub-sectors, representing about 60% of India’s services sector. Fourteen of these 19 sub-sectors recorded double-digit year-on-year growth in April 2026.

Supreme Court’s SOP for Urgent After-Hours Hearings
-Important for Group 1 Mains Exams
The Supreme Court has agreed to examine the creation of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for urgent judicial intervention outside regular court hours in cases involving threats to life and personal liberty. The matter was heard on 14 July 2026 by a three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
The proposed mechanism may cover cases such as illegal detention, custodial violence, imminent demolition of homes, deportation and other urgent government actions. The Court observed that a structured system could reduce response time, possibly enabling courts to respond within an hour in genuine emergencies.
The petition was filed by Supreme Court advocate Maheravish Rein. It sought round-the-clock access to constitutional remedies during nights, weekends, public holidays and court vacations through duty judges, emergency Benches and digital platforms.
The Bench issued notice to all High Courts to obtain their views. Justice Joymalya Bagchi noted that e-filing, emails and telephone communication already allow urgent matters to be brought before courts, but a uniform institutional framework is required for faster action.
The proposal is linked to Article 21, which protects life and personal liberty, and constitutional remedies available before the Supreme Court and High Courts under Articles 32 and 226, respectively.
Key Points for Exams:
- Cases covered may include illegal detention and custodial violence.
- It may also cover imminent demolitions and deportations.

- Article 32 provides constitutional remedies before the Supreme Court.
- Article 226 empowers High Courts to issue writs.
