Delhi High Court on ‘Digital Vigilantism’ and Social Media Justice
- The issue of “digital vigilantism” gained attention after observations by the Delhi High Court in a defamation case.
- The Court noted that social media posts can go beyond free expression and result in public shaming.
- Social media is increasingly used by victims to amplify harassment cases due to delays in the justice system.
- It acts as a tool to “crowdsource accountability” when formal mechanisms fail.
- Experts argue this is not true vigilantism, as it lacks organised intent and enforcement power.
- Instead, it reflects a gap between grievance and justice delivery.
- Concerns include:
- Spread of misinformation
- Lack of fact verification
- Reputational damage to individuals
- The core issue is weak institutional processes.
- Strengthening legal and grievance redressal systems is essential to reduce reliance on social media for justice.
