UAE Exits from OPEC
- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its withdrawal from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, effective May 1, 2026.
- The UAE was the third-largest oil producer in OPEC, and its exit is expected to weaken the cartel’s ability to influence global oil prices.
- The move follows long-standing disagreements over production quotas, as the UAE wanted to increase oil output after expanding its production capacity.
- The UAE also plans to exit the broader OPEC+ group, which includes countries like Russia.
- The decision comes amid global supply tensions, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil trade.

Bangladesh Begins Fuel Loading at First Nuclear Power Plant
Bangladesh has achieved a major milestone in its energy sector by starting the loading of uranium fuel at its first nuclear power plant, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. This marks a crucial step toward operationalising the 2,400 MW facility.
The project has been developed with financial and technical assistance from Russia. Once fully operational, the plant is projected to meet around 10% of the country’s electricity demand.

Prehistoric Rock Painting Site Discovered in Nilgiris

A prehistoric rock painting site has been rediscovered in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu by the Yaakai Heritage Trust. The site, locally known as “Oor Pare”, is located near Vellarikombai village in Kotagiri and holds cultural significance for the Irula and Kurumba tribal communities.
Approximately 30 identifiable figures have been documented, painted in red ochre. These include human-like (anthropomorphic) figures with conical headgear, elongated limbs, ladder-like body structures, and symbolic patterns. The artwork is believed to reflect the ritual practices and spiritual beliefs of prehistoric communities.

Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) 2.0 Report (2023–24)
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj released the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) 2.0 Report on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day (April 24, 2026), marking a significant step toward strengthening grassroots governance and rural development.
- The report highlights that 3,635 Gram Panchayats have been classified as Front Runners, while 1,18,824 Panchayats (around 45.72%) fall under the Performer category.
- Top-performing areas include “Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihoods” and “Healthy Panchayats”, where several Panchayats achieved A+ grades, indicating strong performance in poverty reduction, healthcare, sanitation, and community engagement.
- PAI 2.0 serves as a data-driven governance tool, evaluating Panchayats based on 150 indicators across 9 themes aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Women and Men in India 2025” Report Released
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the 27th edition of the publication “Women and Men in India 2025: Selected Indicators and Data” on April 29, 2026, at Bhubaneswar during the National Deliberative Summit on “Data for Development”.
The report provides a comprehensive analysis of gender-based data across key sectors such as population, education, health, economic participation, decision-making, and violence against women. It includes 50 key indicators with metadata to improve clarity and understanding.
Key Highlights
- Sex Ratio at Birth improved from 904 (2017–19) to 917 (2021–23).
- Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) declined for both males and females (2008–2023).
- Gender parity achieved at all school education levels (Primary to Higher Secondary).
- Higher Education GER increased (Females: from 28.5 to 30.2; Males: from 28.3 to 28.9).
- Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) increased, especially among rural women (37.5% → 45.9%).
- Women in managerial roles grew significantly by 102.54% (2017–2025), higher than men (73.80%).

DRDO Conducts Maiden Salvo Launch of NASM-SR Missile
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Indian Navy, successfully conducted the maiden salvo launch of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Short Range (NASM-SR).
- Two missiles were fired in quick succession from the same helicopter, marking the first-ever salvo launch (multiple missiles are fired rapidly one after another or simultaneously) of this advanced air-launched anti-ship missile system.
- The test was carried out from a naval helicopter platform over the Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast.

Sourav Kothari successfully defended his IBSF World Billiards Championship title by defeating Pankaj Advani in the final held at Carlow, Ireland. With this victory, Kothari continues his reign as world champion and further strengthens India’s dominance in global billiards. He received a prize of $5000, while Advani earned $2500 as runner-up.
