West Bengal Legislative Assembly Signs MoU for NeVA Implementation

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly signed a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 4 June 2026 for the implementation of the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), a digital platform aimed at modernising legislative functioning.

• NeVA is a Mission Mode Project of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs
• With this, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly became the 33rd Legislature in India to join the NeVA initiative.
• 21 Legislatures have already transitioned to fully digital functioning through NeVA

APCNF Wins Food Planet Prize 2026

The Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (APCNF) programme, implemented by Rythu Sadhikara Samstha (RySS), has won the Food Planet Prize 2026, one of the world’s largest environmental awards, carrying a prize money of $1.5 million.

• APCNF received the Food Planet Prize 2026 in Båstad, Sweden.
• The prize is instituted by the Curt Bergfors Foundation.
• It recognises initiatives that promote:
  • Sustainable food systems
  • Environmental protection
  • Climate resilience

• APCNF was launched in 2016 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
• It is considered one of the world’s largest community-led transitions to agroecology and natural farming.

Phenomena of Light

Light is not only essential for vision but also plays a crucial role in modern astronomy, space exploration, and communication technologies. Scientists study various unique properties of light to understand the universe and develop advanced technologies.

Key Concepts

1. Gravitational Lensing

• Occurs when light from a distant object passes near a massive body such as a galaxy or black hole.
• The gravity of the massive object bends and magnifies the light.
• Helps astronomers observe distant galaxies and detect dark matter.

2. Solar Sail Technology

• Light carries momentum and can exert a small force on objects.
• Solar sails utilise the pressure of sunlight to propel spacecraft without the need for conventional fuel.
• Considered a promising technology for long-duration deep-space missions.

3. Evanescent Waves

• Special electromagnetic waves that exist near a surface and decay rapidly away from it.
• Produced during total internal reflection.
• Widely used in optical fibre communication and advanced optical sensors.

Flex Fuel

Flex Fuel is a type of fuel that consists of a blend of gasoline (petrol) and ethanol, allowing specially designed Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) to operate on varying proportions of the two fuels.

Highlights

• Flex Fuel is a mixture of Petrol (Gasoline) and Ethanol (an alcohol-based biofuel).
• Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) can run on different ethanol-petrol blends, such as E20 (20% ethanol), E85 (85% ethanol), and E100 (100% ethanol).
• Ethanol is primarily produced from Sugarcane, Maize (Corn), and Agricultural biomass.

Advantages of Flex Fuel

• Reduces dependence on imported crude oil.
• Lowers greenhouse gas emissions.
• Supports farmers by increasing demand for agricultural feedstocks.
• Promotes renewable and cleaner energy sources.

Flex Fuel in India

• India is promoting ethanol blending under the National Biofuel Policy.
• The Government has advanced the target of 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol.

India Receives Fourth Squadron of S-400 Air Defence System

India has received the fourth squadron of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf air defence system, further strengthening its long-range air defence capabilities. The delivery was completed in May 2026 under the $5.43 billion India–Russia agreement signed in 2018.

• India signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 to procure five S-400 regimental systems.
• Three squadrons had already been inducted into service.
• The fourth squadron has now been delivered after delays caused by the Russia–Ukraine conflict.

The Government of India announced the winners of the 29th National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG) 2026, recognising outstanding initiatives that have leveraged technology to improve governance, public service delivery, transparency, and citizen-centric administration.

Highlights

• The awards recognise excellence across seven categories covering digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, grassroots governance, district-level innovations, and data-driven governance.
• The awards are presented annually by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.
• A total of 17 projects and initiatives were selected for the NAeG 2026 awards.
• The awards include 10 Gold Awards, 6 Silver Awards and 1 Jury Award.
• The awards will be presented during the 29th National Conference on e-Governance to be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
