Cabinet approves Scheme to Promote Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Manufacturing

The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹7,280 crore Scheme to promote the manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPMs) in India. This is India’s first-ever initiative to establish integrated REPM manufacturing capacity of 6,000 MTPA, covering every stage from rare earth oxides to finished magnets. REPMs are critical components used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, electronics, aerospace, defence, and consumer devices. India currently imports most of its REPM requirement, but domestic demand is expected to double by 2030.

Scheme Highlights:

• Total Outlay: ₹7,280 crore
  • ₹6,450 crore — sales linked incentives for 5 years
  • ₹750 crore — capital subsidy
• Capacity Allocation: 6,000 MTPA to be distributed among 5 beneficiaries (up to 1,200 MTPA each)
• Scheme Duration: 7 years

Chairperson of International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will assume the Chairship of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for the year 2026. International IDEA, founded in 1995, is an inter-governmental organisation that works to strengthen democratic institutions and processes globally. It currently has 35 member countries, with the U.S. and Japan as observers.

Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2025

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying released the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2025 on National Milk Day (26 November 2025). The publication provides India’s latest annual estimates on milk, egg, meat, and wool production, based on the Integrated Sample Survey (March 2024 – February 2025).

Martian Crater Named After Indian Geologist M.S. Krishnan

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has officially named a 3.5-billion-year-old crater on Mars after M.S. Krishnan, one of India’s pioneering geologists and former Director of the Geological Survey of India. Along with the crater name ‘Krishnan’, the IAU has also approved Kerala-based names for several smaller Martian landforms associated with it:

• Valiamala
• Thumba
• Bekal
• Varkala
• Periyar Vallis
