Rani Chennamma’s Victory at Kittur

- She was the Queen of Kittur (in present-day Karnataka).
- The revolt was sparked when the British East India Company tried to annex Kittur under the Doctrine of Lapse, following the death of her adopted son.
- Rani Chennamma refused to accept British dominance and led her army against them.
- The first battle (October 1824) saw the Kittur forces defeating the British, killing Collector St John Thackeray.

Madhya Pradesh, India’s largest soybean producer
- Madhya Pradesh, India’s largest soybean producer, is facing a severe soybean crisis due to multiple issues like low yield, poor MSP implementation, high input costs, and fear of U.S. soybean imports.
- Farmers like Arvind Singh Rathore and Dilip Singh report yields have dropped from 4 quintals/acre earlier to 2–2.5 quintals/acre now.
- The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for soybean in 2025 was ₹5,328/quintal, but farmers are forced to sell at ₹3,000–₹3,500/quintal in local markets.
- The Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana (price difference payment scheme) has failed to provide real compensation due to model price manipulation.
- SOPA (Soybean Processors Association of India) warns that import of U.S. soybean (priced at ~$380/tonne vs India’s $620/tonne) could collapse domestic industry and farming, putting ₹6–₹7 billion investments and 180 processing plants at risk.
- Soybean cultivation area fell by 9.1 lakh hectares in 2025 kharif season; total output likely to drop by ~20 LMT.
