Researchers from the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru have developed a new dual-trap optical tweezers system, making high-precision micromanipulation technology more accessible to Indian scientists.

The novel design uses a confocal detection scheme based on backward-scattered light, ensuring that each detector only measures signals from its own trap.

This development will support advanced research in neuroscience, drug development, soft-material probing, and single-molecule studies.

Optical Tweezers

  • Optical tweezers are a scientific tool that uses laser light to trap and move extremely small objects, such as atoms, cells, or molecules without any physical contact.
  • A focused laser beam creates a tiny “trap” of light.
  • Small particles (like cells, viruses, or beads) get pulled toward the center of this laser beam because of light’s electromagnetic forces.
  • By moving the laser, scientists can move the trapped object precisely like using invisible tweezers made of light.
  • The invention of optical tweezers won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for Arthur Ashkin.
