Hutatma Smruti Smarak
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the re-developed Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi in Goa on 26 August 2026. The memorial commemorates the Satyagrahis who participated in the Goa Liberation Movement against Portuguese rule.
Patradevi holds special historical significance because on 15 August 1955, thousands of volunteers from across India participated in a peaceful satyagraha demanding Goa’s liberation. The first group of Satyagrahis entered Goa through Patradevi, where Portuguese forces opened fire, resulting in several deaths.
Goa was eventually liberated from Portuguese rule through Operation Vijay in December 1961, carried out by the Indian Armed Forces.
