Ion Chromatography – Field Analysis Made Simple
Scientists have demonstrated a portable, low-pressure ion chromatography (IC) setup that lets teams measure ions like nitrate/nitrite directly in the field, cutting time and cost versus lab-only workflows.
What is Ion Chromatography?
A liquid-phase separation technique that separates and quantifies ions using an ion-exchange resin. Two main modes: Cation exchange and anion exchange.
What can IC measure?
Major anions (fluoride, chloride, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate), cations (lithium, sodium, ammonium, potassium, calcium, magnesium) typically down to ppb levels; can also quantify organic acids.
How it works?
Inject sample → pressurized column with ion-exchange sites Ions interact with resin; eluent pushes them through Different retention times → separated peaks → concentrations
Why this matters now: Portable IC enables on-site decisions (rivers, farms, treatment plants), hands-on learning for students, and faster monitoring of nutrient pollution.
Applications of Ion Chromatography
- Drinking water quality & pollution checks
- Aquatic ecosystems chemistry (rivers, lakes, estuaries)
- Food analysis (sugars, salts, organic acids)
- Biotech/Proteins: isolation of select charged biomolecules

Penna River
Recently, 18 youngsters were trapped on a mid-channel sandbar in the Penna (Pennar) River near Bhagat Singh Colony, Nellore, after a sudden rise in water level linked to releases from the Somasila reservoir. A coordinated ~7-hour rescue through the night—led by local Police, Fire, Revenue, Irrigation, Municipal authorities, and SDRF—brought all of them to safety.
Penna is a seasonal river; post-release surges can be rapid, especially near barrages/bridges. Local agencies also adjusted gates during the operation to moderate flow and facilitate extraction, underscoring the importance of reservoir-release advisories and riverbank safety during monsoon and post-rain periods.
About Penna River
- Also known as: Pennar, Pinakini, Penneru.
- Origin: Nandi Hills, Chikkaballapur (Karnataka).
- Course & mouth: Flows north into Andhra Pradesh, then east/southeast through a gap in the Eastern Ghats to the Bay of Bengal near Nellore.
- Length: ~597 km; seasonal regime, basin lies in rain-shadow of the Eastern Ghats.
- Major tributaries: Chitravati, Papagni, Cheyyeru, Kunderu (most are seasonal).
- Key projects: Somasila, Mylavaram, Gandikota—vital for Rayalaseema irrigation & drinking water.
‘Magic Drain’ Pilot Project tackles rural waste water — Somavaram, NTR District (AP)
NTR District Water Management Agency reports strong results from a low-cost, eco-friendly “Magic Drain” pilot in Somavaram (Nandigama mandal) during the rainy season.
- Purpose: Decentralised drainage for villages without formal sewers; curbs odour, mosquito breeding, and stagnant-water diseases.
- How it works: Trenches lined with graded stones + soak pits allow household wastewater to filter naturally into the soil → percolation + groundwater recharge.
- Design specs:
- Trenches in 50 m segments; depth 0.40 m → 0.60 m (gradual fall).
- Soak pit every 30 m (≈ 1.0 m L × 0.5 m W × 1.2 m D).
- Side protection: Kadapa stone slab (~2 ft) on house-facing edge to prevent soil ingress.
- Graded fill: trench from 75–100 mm rocks down to 12–20 mm; soak pits in 5 layers (base ~225 mm stones tapering to finer top).
- Governance & Cost: Built under MGNREGS with DWMA oversight; low materials cost, battery of local labour, simple O&M.
- Impact: Smoother drainage, fewer disputes over open channels, groundwater recharge, scalable to similar habitations across the district.
