Altermagnetism
Scientists have identified altermagnetism as a third fundamental magnetic order, alongside ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. First proposed in 2019 and experimentally validated in 2024, altermagnets have zero net magnetisation like antiferromagnets, but show spin-splitting similar to ferromagnets.
This unique combination allows them to carry spin-polarised currents without producing stray magnetic fields, making them highly promising for next-generation spintronics, quantum technologies, and terahertz-speed devices. Recent studies using ARPES and X-ray magnetic dichroism confirmed altermagnetic behaviour in materials like manganese telluride (MnTe) and ruthenium dioxide (RuO₂).
