Scientists have demonstrated a new method of space navigation using just two stars — Proxima Centauri and Wolf 359 — as reference points. The method uses stellar parallax: the apparent shift of a star’s position when observed from two widely separated vantage points. The test was conducted using NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft (launched 2006, flew past Pluto in 2015, now beyond 60 AU). On April 23, 2020, New Horizons observed Proxima Centauri and Wolf 359 from 7 billion km away, giving parallaxes of 32.4 arcseconds and 15.7 arcseconds respectively. The spacecraft’s position was calculated as 46.89 AU, very close to the 47.11 AU measured by radio tracking.
