Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 for Demonstrating Quantum Tunnelling
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis for their pioneering work in building a device that demonstrates quantum tunnelling.
Quantum tunneling is a phenomenon where particles pass through physical barriers that should be impenetrable under classical physics.
Key Scientific Achievement:
- These three scientists constructed an electrical circuit using two superconductors separated by a thin insulating layer known as a Josephson junction.
- This setup enabled them to control and observe how charged particles in superconductors act collectively as a single “quantum particle,” demonstrating the quantum tunnelling effect and superconducting current flow without applied voltage.
- Their findings open new possibilities for the advancement of quantum computing and superconducting technologies much like how early discoveries in quantum mechanics led to the development of transistors and silicon chips.
What is Quantum Tunnelling?
Quantum tunnelling means that sometimes, very tiny particles (like electrons) can do something that seems impossible — they can pass through a wall or barrier even if they don’t have enough energy to climb over it.
Example in simple words:
Imagine you’re rolling a ball up a small hill. If the ball doesn’t have enough speed, it rolls back down — it can’t cross the hill.
But in the quantum world, particles are so small and behave so strangely that sometimes, instead of rolling back, they “tunnel” through the hill and appear on the other side.
So in short:
- Classical physics: The ball can’t cross the hill.
- Quantum physics: The ball (particle) has a chance of appearing on the other side — that’s quantum tunnelling.
Stablecoins
- India is taking a decisive step toward the modernisation of its financial system by preparing to engage with stablecoins. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently stated that India must be ready to engage with crypto assets such as stablecoins
- Stablecoins have grown from experimental crypto projects into regulated financial instruments. The U.S. GENIUS Act and EU’s MiCA framework have established global standards for reserve backing, transparency, and consumer protection.
- Societe Generale became the first European bank to issue a dollar-pegged coin in 2025.
What Are Stablecoins?
- Stablecoins are Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) designed to maintain consistent value through various mechanisms:
- Fiat-backed Stablecoins – backed by traditional currencies (e.g., USDT, USDC).
- Crypto-backed Stablecoins – collateralised by crypto assets (e.g., DAI backed by Ethereum).
- Algorithmic Stablecoins – maintain value through automated supply-demand algorithms (e.g., TerraUSD).
Advantages of Stable Coins:
- Cross-border payments via stablecoins are faster and cheaper — settling in seconds and costing as low as $0.01 per transaction, compared to $44 via traditional banking.
- Visa and Mastercard now support stablecoin settlement on Ethereum and Solana, signalling mainstream adoption.
- Stablecoins are transforming into a new global settlement layer, capable of transferring value as efficiently as the Internet transmits information.
World Bank Raises India’s FY26 Growth Forecast to 6.5%
The World Bank has upgraded India’s GDP growth projection for FY2025–26 to 6.5%, up from the earlier estimate of 6.3%, citing stronger domestic conditions, robust private consumption, and the positive effects of GST reforms. FY2026–27 Forecast: Downgraded to 6.3% (from 6.5%) due to U.S. tariffs on Indian exports.
