ICAR Develops India’s First Indigenous African Swine Fever Vaccine
Scientists at the ICAR–National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (ICAR-NIHSAD), Bhopal, have developed India’s first indigenous live attenuated vaccine against African Swine Fever (ASF). Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan dedicated the vaccine to the nation during the ICAR Foundation Day programme.
The vaccine has been developed using an attenuated African Swine Fever Virus Genotype II with specific gene deletions and grown in the widely available MA-104 cell line. Unlike proprietary cell lines used for some commercially licensed vaccines, the MA-104 platform can support large-scale domestic production at a lower cost.
