“Enshittification” and the Decline of User Experience on Digital Platforms

The term “enshittification”, coined by author and tech journalist Cory Doctorow, has gained attention as a powerful explanation for why many digital platforms seem to be deteriorating over time. Doctorow argues that online services follow a predictable cycle:

  1. They start by being good to users.
  2. Then they prioritise business customers (advertisers, brands).
  3. Finally, they exploit both users and business customers to maximise profit until the platform collapses.

For example:

Social Media

  • Facebook & Instagram now prioritising ads and algorithmic recommended videos over content from friends.

Streaming Platforms:

  • YouTube forces unskippable ads and blocks ad blockers to push users into Premium.

Search Engines

  • Google Search now shows AI-generated summaries and ads than trusted sites.
