Scientists Reconstruct 4,000 Years of Climate History of Majuli Island

Majuli Island

Scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) have reconstructed nearly 4,000 years of climate, vegetation, and flood history of Majuli Island, the world’s largest inhabited river island.

Key Highlights

  • The study reconstructed environmental changes from 4040 to 500 years before present (BP).
  • Researchers collected a 150 cm sediment core from the Sakali Wetland on Majuli Island.
  • The study used:
    • Pollen analysis (Palynology) to reconstruct past vegetation.
    • Grain-size analysis to understand river dynamics, flood intensity, and sediment transport.
  • This is the first comprehensive palaeoecological reconstruction of Majuli Island.
