Truck Technology Enhancing Safety on Indian Highways

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has highlighted the deployment of Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) on National Highways to improve safety for road workers and highway users.

As India rapidly expands its highway network, the focus is not only on connectivity but also on adopting global safety standards to reduce accidents in construction and maintenance zones.

What are Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs)?

Truck Mounted Attenuators are impact-absorbing crash safety devices attached to trucks used in road work zones.

Main Functions:

• Protect road construction and maintenance workers
• Absorb kinetic energy during collisions
• Reduce injury risk to drivers and passengers
• Lower accident severity in highway work zones

Andhra Pradesh Introduces District Ranking for Investment Promotion

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has introduced a new approach to strengthen investment promotion by assigning ranks to districts based on their performance in attracting investments, generating employment, and improving Speed of Doing Business (SoDB).

The initiative was announced during the Collectors’ Conference, where N. Chandrababu Naidu directed District Collectors to play a proactive role in mobilizing investments at the grassroots level.

Parameters for District Ranking

• Capital investment mobilized
• Employment created
• Speed of Doing Business (SoDB)
• Prompt regulatory clearances

Additional Measures

• Collectors given discretionary power to allot up to 5 acres of land for certain projects, especially tourism.
• Focus areas for districts unable to attract large industries IT, MSMEs and Tourism.

Visakhapatnam Zoo to Display Black Panther After 40 Years

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, has reintroduced a female black panther into public display after a gap of nearly 40 years. The animal was brought from the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden, Guwahati, under an inter-zoo exchange programme.

The black panther had been kept in quarantine since March 5, 2026, as per zoo protocols, and was formally released into its enclosure on April 21, 2026.

About Black Panther:

• Scientific Name: Panthera pardus (Leopard)
• Black panther is not a separate species. It is a melanistic variant of the leopard, caused by excess black pigmentation.
• Leopard (Panthera pardus) is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
• Protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

1. Karnataka – Especially Kabini (Nagarhole National Park), famous for frequent sightings

How Smart Washbasins Work

Automatic washbasins use:

• IR LED (Infrared Light Emitting Diode) to emit invisible infrared light
• Photodiode sensor to detect reflected IR light

When a hand is placed below the tap:

• Infrared light reflects from the hand
• Sensor detects the reflected signal
• Water flow is automatically activated

Infrared waves are widely used in:

• TV remotes
• AC remotes
• Motion sensors
• Smart washbasins
