BSF Explores Use of Reptiles for Border Security Along Bangladesh Border

The Border Security Force has been directed to explore the feasibility of deploying reptiles such as snakes and crocodiles in riverine stretches along the India–Bangladesh border to curb infiltration and illegal activities.

• Proposal is based on directions from Amit Shah
• Focus area – Riverine and low-lying border regions
• The main aim of this new proposal is to prevent illegal migration, smuggling and cross-border crimes.

Background:

• The total length of the India–Bangladesh border is approximately 4,096.7 km.
• Out of this, around 3,326.14 km has been approved for fencing by the government.
• So far, approximately 2,954.56 km of the border has been successfully fenced.
• Nearly 371 km of the border still remains unfenced, mainly due to difficult terrain such as riverine and low-lying areas.

India Launches First-Ever ASISSE Survey for Services Sector

• The National Statistics Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has launched the first-ever Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE) in April 2026.
• The survey covers all States and Union Territories with the reference period being financial year 2024–25.

Key Highlights

• The survey aims to develop a comprehensive database of the incorporated services sector in India.
• It will cover approximately 1.21 lakh enterprises across the country.
• The survey uses the GSTN database as the sampling frame to ensure wide coverage.

Scope of Survey

• The survey includes corporate entities such as:
  • Companies registered under the Companies Act
  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
• It covers key service sectors such as trade, transport, hospitality, IT, Education and Health.

Economic Importance

• The services sector contributes more than half of India’s GDP and generates millions of jobs.
• ASISSE will provide key economic and operational indicators for better policymaking and analysis.

Andhra Pradesh to Host International Dragon Boat League (IDBL) 2026

Andhra Pradesh is set to host the International Dragon Boat League (IDBL) 2026 in Rajamahendravaram on the Godavari River, starting from May 30, 2026. The event will be conducted for three days, making it a major international water sports festival in the State.

Key Highlights

• Nearly 1,000 athletes are expected to take part, showcasing global participation.
• The event will be organised by the State Government in collaboration with the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA) and a private organising firm.
• Around 25 countries have been invited to participate in the event.

Prime Minister Modi became longest serving elected leader in India

Narendra Modi has completed 8,931 days in public office, combining his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister of India. His tenure includes service as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and as Prime Minister from 2014 to the present. He has surpassed the record of Pawan Kumar Chamling, the former Chief Minister of Sikkim, to become one of the longest-serving elected leaders in India.

Constitutional Aspect

• The Indian Constitution does not impose any term limit on the offices of Prime Minister and Chief Ministers.
• The Prime Minister continues in office as long as he or she enjoys the confidence of the Lok Sabha.

Why No Term Limit?

• Dr. B.R. Ambedkar explained that, executive accountability is ensured through no-confidence motions, parliamentary questions, and periodic elections rather than fixed term limits.

• The Tenth Schedule (Anti-Defection Law) restricts legislators from voting against their party leadership.
• This restriction may weaken parliamentary accountability and reduce effective checks on executive power.

Interesting Constitutional Contrast

• In contrast, the Prime Minister has neither a constitutional limit nor a convention restricting the number of terms.
• The office of the President of India has no constitutional term limit, but by convention, Presidents generally serve a maximum of two terms.

National Household Survey 2024 Report on Textiles

The Ministry of Textiles released the report titled “Market for Textiles & Clothing: National Household Survey 2024”, highlighting trends in domestic textile demand in India.

• The total textile market size in India has grown from ₹4.89 lakh crore in 2010 to ₹14.95 lakh crore in 2024.
• The domestic market size of textiles stands at ₹12.02 lakh crore in 2024.
• Household demand for textiles has increased to ₹8.77 lakh crore, playing a major role in market growth.
• The per capita textile demand has risen from ₹2,119 in 2010 to ₹6,066 in 2024, indicating increased consumption.
