UN DESA Projects India’s Growth at 7.2% in FY 2025–26

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) has projected that India’s economy will grow by 7.2% in FY 2025–26. According to the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2026 report, India’s growth will be supported primarily by resilient private consumption and strong public investment, which are expected to largely offset the negative impact of U.S. tariff measures, even though around 18% of Indian exports are destined for the U.S. market.

Renowned ecologist Madhav Gadgil passed away

Renowned ecologist and environmental thinker Madhav Gadgil passed away in Pune at the age of 83. He is widely remembered for transforming India’s conservation philosophy by placing human rights and community participation at the centre of environmental protection. USA withdraws from International Solar Alliance (ISA)

India has reaffirmed its commitment to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and its global solar energy goals, even as the United States announced its withdrawal from the alliance in January 2026. The ISA, a 125-member multilateral body, was conceptualised at COP21 in Paris (2015) and formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former French President Francois Hollande.

The alliance aims to mobilise $1 trillion in solar investments by 2030, reduce technology and financing costs, and accelerate solar adoption, especially in least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS).

USA Withdraws from UNFCCC

In a significant development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a foundational global climate treaty adopted in 1992. The move is part of a broader decision to exit 66 international organisations and treaties, many linked to the United Nations, which the U.S. administration described as being against national interests.

Andhra Pradesh Cabinet Clears Key Infrastructure & Investment Decisions

A key decision was the approval to set up the AP Logistics Infrastructure Corporation (APLINC) as an integrated holding company to develop logistics infrastructure projects. Alongside this, the Cabinet cleared the creation of an AP Logistics Fund, structured as an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF), to mobilise institutional capital for logistics projects, with the State government acting as the initial sponsor with up to a 20% stake.

The Cabinet also approved:

  • Allotment of 150 acres to Ethereal Exploration Guild Pvt. Ltd. for a rocket launch vehicle and engine manufacturing unit in the upcoming Space City, Tirupati district.
  • Allotment of land to Pioneer Clean Amps Pvt. Ltd. for manufacturing Hansa-3 (NG) trainer aircraft and setting up a flight training school in Chittoor district.
  • Establishment of new electrical steel, wind mast, cement, and renewable energy manufacturing projects across Kadapa, Nandyal, Tirupati, and Nellore districts.
  • Approval of a ₹200-crore AP Cluster Development Programme for MSME Common Facility Centres.
  • Withdrawal of additional retail excise tax on bars and a marginal increase in IMFL prices to generate ₹1,391 crore annually.
  • A ₹5,000-crore government guarantee to enable loans for AP Jal Jeevan Water Supply Corporation.
  • Administrative approval for the 950 MW pumped storage hydroelectric project at Kamalapadu, Anantapur district.
