New year for Gujarati
The Gujarati community across the world celebrated New Year on 22 October 2025. In Gujarat, the new year, which is popularly known as ‘Bestu Varsh’, is celebrated on the first day of the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar Vikram Samvat.
Coal India & IIT Madras Collaborate to Establish Centre for Sustainable Energy
Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to establish the “Centre for Sustainable Energy” at IIT Madras.
The newly established centre will act as a hub for research and development (R&D) and capacity building in sustainable energy technologies, supported by CIL’s funding. It will focus on key areas such as:
- Repurposing coal mines for cleaner energy applications
- Developing low-carbon technologies
- Reimagining coal as a feedstock for India’s clean energy future
Piyush Goyal Leads Indian Delegation at the 16th Session of UNCTAD in Geneva
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, led India’s delegation at the XVIth Session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) held in Geneva. During his national address, he addressed India’s transformation into one of the top five global economies, growing at an average annual rate of over 7% in the last three years and doubling its economy every eight years.
Japan–India Maritime Exercise (JAIMEX-25)
The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sahyadri, an indigenously built Shivalik-class Guided Missile Stealth Frigate, participated in the Sea Phase of JAIMEX-25 (Japan–India Maritime Exercise) from 16 to 18 October 2025 and later made a port call at Yokosuka, Japan, on 21 October 2025 for the Harbour Phase.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh formally conferred the Honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army upon India’s star javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra.
India Rises to 9th Position Globally
India has made a major leap in global environmental rankings, moving up to the 9th position in total forest area globally, according to the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025 released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Bali. The country has also maintained its 3rd position globally in annual forest area gain.

Kerala Becomes India’s First State to be Free from Extreme Poverty
Kerala is set to achieve a historic milestone by becoming the first State in India to be officially declared “free from extreme poverty.” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will make the formal declaration on November 1, 2025, during a public event at Central Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. As per a NITI Aayog study (2021), Kerala already had the lowest poverty rate in India at 0.7% of its population.

Andhra Pradesh to Build a Five-Kilometre-Wide “Great Green Wall” by 2030
- To combat coastal erosion, climate risks, and livelihood loss along its 1,053-km-long coastline, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has announced plans to create a massive “Great Green Wall of Andhra Pradesh” by 2030.
- This five-kilometre-wide green corridor will serve as a living ecological shield, aiming to protect over three million coastal residents from environmental hazards such as cyclones, sea-level rise, and flooding.
- The initiative is expected to combine mangrove restoration, afforestation, dune stabilization, and sustainable livelihood projects, promoting biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
